I just did something similar, but you filled in a lot of stuff that I would have had to figure out.
The kde-core approach is significantly faster (usage and start-up). I hope in the next Ubuntu release they make the default Kubuntu faster. I do not see why they cannot--I don't feel like anything is missing after installing everything in your post.
Thanks a lot. I had decided to do this on my own, have already done a server install of edgy and was wondering what packages to install. You've answered several of my questions and saved me a lot of time.
